How and when did you know you wanted to become an interior designer?

My journey into interior design began in a world curated by my mother, steeped in antique refinishing, collecting, and historic preservation. From a young age, I was reimagining spaces and furniture and seeing their potential, instead of their current state, much thanks to her. The pivotal moment which solidified my career choice arose in 2005 when a friend entrusted me to redesign his boutique hotel in southern Spain. The sheer joy I experienced during that project became the catalyst for my decision to wholeheartedly pursue a career in this captivating creative field.

What does the future of interior design look like to you?

In a word – Authentic. People post-COVID are delving deeper into meaningful design for their spaces, focusing on what truly resonates with them rather than following trends. There's a significant shift towards authentic materials like real stone and natural fibers, and prioritizing well-being by eliminating harmful chemicals. I’m also delighted to see more attention to proper space-planning, with an increasing number of interior and exterior plans reflecting classical design principles that soothe and uplift, ease the nervous system, and foster a sense of pride in one’s humanity. The opportunity to live, work or play in spaces that embodies those qualities is becoming increasingly sought after in today’s times, and that’s wonderful.

What inspires you creatively? Where do you go to find inspiration?

I possess an expansive wellspring of curiosity which is fed by continuous learning. Whether delving into random classes (most recently on hydroponic farming, pottery, and Meisner Theory), or immersing myself in international travels to observe diverse living and design styles. I find beauty in every facet of life. My extensive travel portfolio is filled with thousands of photographs which serve as a dynamic source for integrating ideas into my designs, ranging from intricate metal grates, to captivating mosaic patterns. The profound impact of language as an inspiration is a recurring theme in my life as well. Through various periods, I have lived abroad, discovering that immersing myself in different cultures to learn their languages opens up new perspectives on life and how we live it.

How has being an ASID member helped you throughout your career?

Being an ASID member has been instrumental in my career journey, primarily through the enriching continuing education courses. These courses expand my design horizons beyond my typical focus, keeping me abreast of relevant industry topics. Moreover, ASID provides invaluable opportunities for socializing with like-minded creative professionals and networking with innovative service providers, ultimately enhancing the scope of possibilities for my clients.

What advice would you share with other designers starting out in our industry?

Pursue projects that inspire and nourish your soul, recognizing the unique value of your talent. While the allure of working for the sheer joy of creation is strong, remember the blend of knowledge, expertise, and years of training you bring to craft spaces that allow clients to thrive. Embrace calculated risks, step out of your comfort zone annually, and embark on a perpetual journey of learning and expansion.

What is a current/nearly complete project you are working on and what do you love about it?

My latest project is an office design resonating with a luxury hotel vibe, infused with vintage Italian furniture, lighting, and architectural elements. The project not only serves as a tribute to my client’s Italian entrepreneurial family who initiated the business a generation ago, but also to my prior collaboration as a designer on the Four Seasons Downtown in 2013 with Robert AM Stern. Rooted in hospitality, the design ensures multi-functionality, seamlessly transforming from a functional workspace during the day to an enchanting entertainment space by night. In the client's words, the space needed to feel "established" and "make him feel like he had arrived." This design has indeed achieved that, creating an environment that speaks to the client, his team, and his family.
